A recent United Nations report reveals that 152 families have fled from Ibb Governorate, controlled by the Houthi militia, to Marib Governorate. This migration occurred in 2024, as Marib continues to host the majority of displaced individuals in Yemen.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) highlighted this displacement in its annual report on migration in Yemen. The report indicates that the displacement matrix tracked the movement of 152 families from Ibb to Marib last year.
According to the IOM, Ibb ranks third in the number of families displaced to Marib, following Al Hudaydah and Taiz. This statistic underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
The report attributes the displacement to security concerns and economic hardships. Families are fleeing Ibb due to fears for their safety and the dire economic situation. The Houthi-controlled governorate has seen increased repression of dissenters, limited income opportunities, and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Many families are compelled to seek refuge in safer areas within liberated governorates.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen continues to drive families from their homes, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a resolution to the crisis. As the situation evolves, the international community must remain vigilant and responsive to the needs of displaced populations.
