Federal Investigation Launched into Tesla’s Cybercab Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an official investigation into Tesla’s decision to launch its new Cybercab vehicles on public roads without traditional steering wheels or pedals. This investigation comes just hours after the first Cybercabs appeared on the streets of Austin, Texas.

Regulatory Agency’s Position

NHTSA Director Jonathan Morrison emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting the development of autonomous vehicles. However, he stressed the importance of ensuring full compliance with federal regulations. Morrison noted that the agency’s approach balances innovation with safety, highlighting the need for rigorous oversight in the evolving automotive landscape.

Tesla has informed the NHTSA that it has independently certified the Cybercab’s compliance with safety standards. This self-certification process is common in the automotive industry. Nevertheless, the investigation will scrutinize the technical data and the self-certification mechanisms Tesla employed, as well as assess whether certain standards are applicable to the vehicle.

Similar Precedents

This is not the first time the NHTSA has opened an investigation into unconventional vehicle designs. In 2022, the agency investigated Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon, after it approved a self-driving taxi without traditional controls. This earlier inquiry eventually led to a formal audit.

Anticipated Regulatory Changes

The NHTSA has acknowledged that it is working on revising some manual control standards to foster innovation while enhancing safety. This indicates that the future of autonomous vehicles in the United States may witness significant legislative changes.
