Tragic Incident in Nham: Child Killed and Another Injured by Houthi Landmine

A tragic incident occurred in Nham, northeast of the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, where a 15-year-old boy, Adam Ali Al-Qalam, lost his life, and a 13-year-old boy, Ali Ali Jazeelan, suffered severe injuries due to a landmine explosion. The landmine, reportedly planted by the Iran-backed Houthi militia, detonated while the children were herding sheep.

Details of the Incident

The explosion took place last Friday morning in the Al-Athibi area, near the village of Al-Naimat, within the Al-Ayal Ghafir district of Nham. According to the human rights organization, Witnesses for Human Rights, the children were working for a monthly wage when the tragic event unfolded.

Witnesses reported that Adam Ali Al-Qalam died instantly from multiple shrapnel wounds. Meanwhile, Ali Ali Jazeelan remains hospitalized and is receiving necessary medical care for his injuries, which include the amputation of one leg below the knee.

Accountability for the Incident

Witnesses for Human Rights condemned the incident, holding the Houthi militia fully responsible for the tragedy. The organization emphasized that the militia had planted landmines in civilian areas, including grazing paths and agricultural fields, before taking complete control of Nham in January 2020.

Conclusion

This heartbreaking event highlights the ongoing dangers posed by landmines in Yemen, particularly for children. As the conflict continues, the need for increased awareness and action to protect civilians becomes ever more urgent.
