In a heartbreaking event in the Al-Mudharabah district of Lahij province, southern Yemen, two children lost their lives, and their grandmother sustained severe injuries due to an explosion caused by an unexploded ordnance. Local sources reported the incident, highlighting the ongoing dangers posed by remnants of war in the region.
The victims, children from the family of citizen Faid Mansour Al-Douj, found an unexploded shell in the village of “Amraznah” in the Al-Barhena area. They brought the device home, where it detonated while they were playing with it. The explosion killed both children instantly and left their grandmother critically injured. Emergency responders transported her to a hospital in Aden, where she remains in serious condition.
Yemen ranks among the most heavily contaminated countries in the world due to remnants of war. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthi militia of planting over two million landmines in the past decade. Human rights reports indicate that approximately 10,000 individuals, including women and children, have died or been injured in various Yemeni provinces during this period.
This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and action regarding the dangers of unexploded ordnance in Yemen. As the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of conflict, the safety of its citizens remains a pressing concern.
