Turkish Football Federation Ends Contract with Vincenzo Montella
The Turkish Football Federation announced on Friday the termination of its contract with Italian coach Vincenzo Montella. This decision follows a series of disappointing results in the UEFA Nations League, where the Turkish national team lost all its matches in Group A against France, Belgium, and Italy, both home and away.
Consecutive Losses and Declining Performance
The decision came after the team’s performance declined over recent months. Turkey struggled in the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, securing only one victory and finishing at the bottom of its group. Subsequently, the team faced four consecutive defeats in the UEFA Nations League, including two home losses, without earning any points in what has been described as a disappointing campaign.
Montella’s Tenure with the National Team
Montella took charge of the Turkish national team in September 2023. During his tenure, he achieved notable milestones, including reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2024 before being eliminated by the Netherlands. He also led the team in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, elevating the team’s status to compete alongside top European nations in the UEFA Nations League.
Promising Generation… But Results Fall Short of Expectations
Despite having a promising generation of players, including Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Arda Güler, and Kenan Yıldız, the national team appeared unable to respond effectively in several matches and lacked cohesion. This prompted the federation to make the decision to dismiss Montella ahead of the remaining two matches against Belgium and France.
