Trump and Putin Agree to Immediate Negotiations to End Ukraine War

On Wednesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a “long and very productive” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During this conversation, both leaders agreed to initiate negotiations “immediately” aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Call for Diplomatic Visits

Trump shared details of the call on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that both leaders extended invitations to visit each other’s countries. Following this, the Ukrainian presidency confirmed that President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Trump for nearly an hour, discussing “opportunities for peace” in Ukraine.

Commitment to Negotiations

In his remarks, Trump emphasized, “We also agreed that our teams should start negotiations right away. I will contact President Zelensky to inform him about our discussion, and I will do that now.”

Zelensky’s Readiness for Compromise

Later, President Zelensky reiterated his willingness to exchange territory in any negotiations with Russia. This statement came after Russia released at least one American prisoner, a gesture Trump described as a sign of goodwill towards ending the war.

Historically, Zelensky has resisted any territorial concessions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, in a recent interview with The Guardian, he expressed readiness for serious talks ahead of the Munich Security Conference, where he will meet with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, a vocal opponent of U.S. military support for Ukraine.

Potential Land Exchanges

Zelensky stated, “We will exchange for another area,” indicating his openness to trading land in the Kursk region of Russia, which Ukraine captured during a swift offensive last year. He acknowledged that Ukraine cannot rely solely on European partners for security guarantees, asserting, “Security guarantees without America are not real security guarantees.”

Trump’s Strategy for Peace

Trump pledged to end the war in Ukraine, likely leveraging the billions of dollars in U.S. aid provided by his successor, Joe Biden, as leverage to encourage Ukraine to make territorial concessions.

Diplomatic Progress

The recent visit of Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia marked the first known trip by a Trump administration official since he returned to the White House last month. This visit resulted in the release of Mark Vogel, who had been imprisoned since 2021 on drug-related charges.

Trump commented on Vogel’s release, stating, “He was treated very well in Russia.” He added, “In fact, I hope this is the beginning of a relationship through which we can end the war.”

This development signals a potential shift in diplomatic efforts regarding the Ukraine conflict, as key leaders engage in discussions aimed at achieving peace.
