Recent reports from tribal sources in Saada province reveal alarming incidents of torture involving a local citizen. Members of the Houthi militia allegedly engaged in this brutal act as part of personal vendettas and to exploit their power for personal gain.
Sources indicate that a man named Abu Ayed Mushtaq, who falsely claims to be the security director of Al-Salem in Kitaf, along with his assistant Abu Hakim Al-Salmi, confronted a local resident, Layth Ahmed Nasser Ali Al-Farashi. They reportedly imprisoned and tortured him to seize his new vehicle and personal firearm. The sources also noted that Abu Hakim and Abu Mushtaq are cousins, which may have influenced their actions.
The reports confirm that Layth Al-Farashi endured severe torture while in custody, aimed at extracting multiple confessions, some of which pertain to drug-related offenses without any supporting evidence. Currently, he remains imprisoned in Qahza, Saada province. Furthermore, the Houthi leaders have obstructed his inclusion in a committee led by Ali Nasser Qirsha, which the group established to facilitate the release of thousands of prisoners, including those accused of drug offenses.
Tribal sources emphasize that incidents of torture, kidnapping, and enforced disappearances are rampant in Saada, largely escaping media attention. Many of these acts stem from personal motives, with victims often facing fabricated charges related to drugs or other offenses to justify the abuses.
The situation in Saada highlights the urgent need for accountability and transparency regarding human rights violations in the region. As these reports continue to emerge, the international community must pay closer attention to the plight of those suffering under the Houthi militia’s oppressive regime.
