Major General Omar Ahmed Bamshemous, the Director General of Traffic Police, reported alarming statistics regarding traffic accidents in the liberated provinces during the first half of 2026. The data reveals that 392 individuals lost their lives, while 2,841 sustained injuries, including 1,048 severe cases. In an effort to enhance road safety and enforce traffic laws, the Traffic Police recorded 109,053 traffic violations.
The Traffic Police documented a total of 2,630 traffic incidents, categorized as follows:
Mareb province reported the highest number of accidents, totaling 891, followed by Taiz with 436 and Lahij with 284. Mareb also led in fatalities, with 56 deaths, while Lahij recorded 51, and both Aden and Abyan reported 50 deaths each.
Mareb province also experienced the highest number of injuries, with 511 cases, followed by Taiz with 462 and Lahij with 388. Major General Bamshemous attributed the rise in accidents primarily to human factors, such as speeding, improper overtaking, and failure to adhere to traffic rules.
He emphasized that neglecting regular vehicle maintenance and violating safety regulations significantly contribute to accidents. Additionally, he noted a concerning increase in vehicle fires due to the transportation of flammable materials in public transport and illegal modifications to fuel systems.
Major General Bamshemous highlighted that overloading vehicles, allowing children to drive before reaching the legal age, and ongoing motorcycle violations are key factors in the occurrence of accidents. He reiterated his call for drivers and road users to comply with traffic regulations and safety measures.
He stressed that protecting lives is a shared responsibility. Enhancing traffic awareness and respecting the law are fundamental pillars in reducing accidents and ensuring community safety.
