The Yemeni Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Dr. Mohammed Al-Maitami, met today with Chen Weiqing, the Director of the West Asia and North Africa Department at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They discussed the current situation in Yemen, the recent military escalation by the Houthi militia, and the security of international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. They also addressed the bilateral relations between the two friendly countries.
Ambassador Al-Maitami reviewed the developments in Yemen, highlighting the announcement by President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, regarding the launch of “Fajr Yemen.” This initiative aims to end the Houthi militia’s coup and restore state institutions while re-establishing the legitimate government’s authority across the entire national territory. He praised the position of the Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen for its support of the Yemeni government. Furthermore, he noted the ongoing Iranian interventions and military support for the Houthi militia, which pose a threat to Yemen’s security, regional stability, and international navigation.
Al-Maitami emphasized the importance of the international community, particularly China, taking a more active role in supporting the legitimate Yemeni government and its efforts to restore the state. He stressed the need to maintain security and stability in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as these areas represent some of the most crucial maritime and commercial routes in the world.
The ambassador addressed the worsening humanitarian crisis caused by the war ignited by the Houthi militia. He underscored the importance of enhancing Chinese humanitarian and developmental assistance and activating cooperation programs through the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency. This support would help alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.
In response, the Chinese official reaffirmed his country’s support for Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He expressed China’s commitment to achieving security and stability in Yemen and the region. Additionally, he indicated China’s readiness to provide humanitarian and developmental assistance aimed at alleviating the humanitarian crisis faced by the Yemeni people.
