On Friday, the United Nations issued a grave warning indicating that the hunger crisis in Sudan could evolve into a humanitarian catastrophe. Approximately 20 million individuals are currently facing severe food insecurity, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted in April 2023.
Alarming Hunger Statistics in Sudan
A joint statement from several UN entities, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF, highlighted that nearly 19.5 million Sudanese—equivalent to two out of every five people—are enduring critical levels of hunger. This alarming statistic is derived from the latest report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
Cindy McCain, the Executive Director of the WFP, underscored the pressing threat that hunger and malnutrition pose to millions of lives. She urged for immediate international intervention to halt the deterioration of this humanitarian crisis.
Impact of Ongoing Conflict on Food Security
The persistent conflict, now entering its fourth year, has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and has displaced over 11 million individuals both within Sudan and across its borders. Combat activities have expanded into regions such as Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile, with a noted increase in drone attacks that have claimed approximately 880 civilian lives since the start of the year.
The report indicates that 14 areas in Darfur and South Kordofan are at risk of famine if hostilities escalate or if access to food remains severely limited. Furthermore, 135,000 individuals are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger, emphasizing the critical need for humanitarian assistance.
Warnings on Child Malnutrition
UNICEF has issued a stark warning that by 2026, an estimated 825,000 children under the age of five will suffer from acute and severe malnutrition, representing a 7% increase from the previous year. The organization stressed that immediate intervention is essential to prevent further loss of life among vulnerable children.
