On Saturday, the new academic year commenced in regions under Houthi control. Teachers opened school doors despite facing severe living conditions. Reports indicate that educators have not received their salaries for nearly a decade, exacerbating their daily hardships.
Calls for teachers’ rights are growing louder. Educator Abdullah Ra’dan emphasized the need for peaceful advocacy for legitimate rights. He questioned how teachers can inspire hope in their students when they struggle to provide basic necessities for their own families.
In a recent Facebook post, Ra’dan urged fellow educators to reflect before heading to school: “Can you instill hope in your students while your children await their next meal?” He clarified that this message does not advocate abandoning education but rather defends their rights, which is essential for preserving the educational mission.
Teachers in Houthi-controlled regions have endured economic hardships for years. The Houthi militia continues to exploit the educational sector without granting basic rights to its workers. The suspension of salaries complicates the educational landscape, making it increasingly difficult for teachers to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
In light of these challenges, educators hope that relevant authorities will respond to their demands and resume their halted salaries. Education is a fundamental right, and efforts must be made to secure the rights of those working in this vital sector.
