The Saudi National Human Rights Association has condemned the ongoing recruitment and exploitation of children by Houthi terrorist militias. This practice endangers the lives, safety, and futures of these children, depriving them of education and a secure life while involving them in combat operations.
In a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the association referenced international reports documenting cases of child recruitment and use by the Houthi militia. The reports also raised concerns about exposing children to military content and activities. The association emphasized that these practices represent a grave violation of children’s rights and contradict established international rules and guarantees designed to protect them from recruitment and exploitation in armed conflicts.
The association asserted that addressing child recruitment should not be limited to condemnation or documenting violations. Instead, it requires concrete actions to halt these practices, secure the release of recruited children, prevent their re-recruitment, and ensure accountability for those responsible.
The association urged the United Nations and the Security Council to take decisive action against the continued recruitment and exploitation of children. It called for the activation of relevant international measures and mechanisms to hold violators accountable and limit their ability to continue these actions. The association highlighted that involving children in conflicts contributes to cycles of violence and extremism, prolongs disputes, and undermines peace and stability efforts, ultimately affecting international peace and security.
The association stressed the need to couple efforts to stop child recruitment and exploitation with effective rehabilitation programs for affected children. These programs should facilitate their reintegration into families and schools, providing necessary psychological and social support to help them regain normalcy in their lives and secure their futures.
The association emphasized that protecting children cannot be delayed. It called for a shift from merely monitoring violations to actively stopping them, moving from condemnation to accountability. The rightful place for children is with their families, in schools, and within their communities, not on battlefields.
