Prime Minister Receives World Bank Delegation in Aden

On Sunday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek welcomed a delegation from the World Bank, led by Regional Director Stefan Guimbert, who oversees Egypt, Yemen, and Djibouti. The visit aims to strengthen collaboration and support the Yemeni government’s efforts in addressing pressing economic and developmental challenges.

Strengthening Partnerships

During the meeting, participants discussed ways to enhance partnerships and support the government’s priorities. Key topics included strategies for achieving financial and institutional stability, the progress of ongoing projects, and future plans. The discussions also focused on mobilizing support for the economic recovery plan and continuing comprehensive reforms.

Focus on the Electricity Sector

The meeting highlighted mechanisms to activate partnerships with the International Finance Corporation. Participants explored potential projects in the electricity sector and encouraged both local and foreign private investments in this vital area.

Acknowledging Support

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister bin Brek expressed gratitude for the World Bank delegation’s visit, emphasizing its significance in supporting the government during these challenging times. He acknowledged the Bank’s contributions to economic, service, and developmental aspects, stressing the need to amplify this support. He noted that such assistance is crucial for overcoming the compounded crises exacerbated by Houthi militia attacks on oil export ports.

Addressing Urgent Priorities

The Prime Minister outlined the government’s urgent priorities, focusing on economic and service sectors. He emphasized the importance of stabilizing the national currency, improving local revenues, and addressing critical sector imbalances in electricity, water, and health. Additionally, he highlighted the need to protect vulnerable populations by expanding cash and food support programs.

Commitment from the World Bank

In response, the World Bank delegation leader reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting the Yemeni government and its economic and developmental priorities. He expressed the Bank’s dedication to enhancing institutional capacity and strengthening partnerships with the private sector. The delegation aims to expand its programs in Yemen and collaborate closely with the government.

Attendees

The meeting included key figures such as Minister of Electricity and Energy Mani Ben Yamin, Deputy Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Dr. Nizar Bashihab, Prime Minister Advisor Ambassador Mujib Othman, and Dina Abu Ghaida, the World Bank’s Country Director for Yemen.
