Prime Minister Receives UNICEF Representative in Aden
On Monday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek welcomed Peter Hawkins, the UNICEF Resident Representative in Yemen, in the temporary capital of Aden. During their meeting, Hawkins outlined the ongoing preparations for the launch of the "Masanida" social support program. This initiative aims to provide unconditional cash transfers to the most vulnerable and needy populations across Yemen.
Enhanced Support for Vulnerable Families
Hawkins explained that the Masanida program is an improved version of the unconditional cash transfer project that UNICEF has implemented since 2017, with funding from the World Bank. This previous initiative has benefited over 1.4 million families in Yemen, helping them meet their basic needs. The redesigned Masanida program targets 500,000 Yemeni families and involves coordination with relevant government agencies to initiate implementation. Hawkins expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and wished him success in his leadership role.
UNICEF’s Humanitarian Efforts
The discussion also covered UNICEF’s humanitarian interventions, particularly in the health sector. The organization supports the government’s efforts to combat epidemics and manage health crises. Additionally, UNICEF plans to enhance its initiatives in child protection, safe water provision, quality education, skill development, and all forms of life-saving assistance.
Strengthening Government-UNICEF Partnership
Prime Minister bin Brek praised the existing partnership between the government and UNICEF. He emphasized the importance of enhancing coordination to ensure that interventions align with the needs of communities, especially in areas experiencing significant displacement. The Prime Minister expressed his hope for continued UNICEF support in addressing epidemics and balancing humanitarian efforts with sustainable development.
Attendees of the Meeting
The meeting also included Dr. Waed Bazeeb, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, and Ambassador Mujib Osman, the Prime Minister’s advisor.
