In a recent meeting held in Aden, Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak urged the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) to enhance its role in data collection and indicator production. He highlighted that effective planning and sound decision-making depend significantly on accurate statistical data. This initiative aims to provide essential information to Yemen’s partners and donors, facilitating targeted interventions.
During the meeting, Dr. bin Mubarak stressed the critical role of data and information in crafting realistic plans. He called for improved coordination with Yemen’s international partners and donor organizations to bolster the CSO’s capacity. The goal is to establish a comprehensive statistical database that includes economic and social development indicators, national accounts, and various field surveys. These surveys will cover essential areas such as household budgets, price indices, economic services, and poverty assessments.
Dr. bin Mubarak mandated all relevant ministries and agencies to collaborate with the CSO. He emphasized that the CSO is the official body authorized by current laws to gather statistical data and conduct censuses and surveys. This collaboration will ensure a reliable reference for data that reflects current changes. The Prime Minister pointed out that the CSO serves as the sole reference for executing any surveys or data collection efforts, necessitating cooperation from local, international, and UN organizations operating in Yemen.
During the meeting, Dr. Safaa Maati, head of the CSO, presented a report detailing the organization’s progress, completed projects, and future plans. She announced an upcoming comprehensive census of the population, housing, and establishments, noting that the last population estimate from the 2004 census will be updated this year. Dr. Maati also discussed the importance of collaboration between the CSO, government entities, and international organizations, proposing strategies to enhance coordination and achieve the CSO’s objectives of providing reliable statistical data.
The meeting concluded with the presence of the Prime Minister’s advisor, Ambassador Mujib Othman, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening statistical capabilities in Yemen. By prioritizing data collection and analysis, the government aims to improve decision-making processes and support sustainable development initiatives across the country.
