The population of Gaza is projected to decline by approximately 160,000 by the end of 2024.

Population Decline in Gaza by 6% by End of 2024

According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the population of Gaza has decreased by 6% by the end of 2024. This decline reflects the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

Casualties and Displacement Amid Ongoing Conflict

Alia Awad, the head of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, reported that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of 45,484 Palestinians in Gaza as of December 2024. The figures, released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, reveal that approximately 100,000 Palestinians have fled the area since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023. The violence continues to affect the lives of countless individuals in the region.

Awad emphasized that among the deceased, around 17,581 are children, and approximately 12,048 are women. The conflict has also left nearly 11,000 individuals missing and injured about 108,090 others.

Current Population Estimates for Palestine

The report estimates that the total population of Palestine at the end of 2024 stands at approximately 5.5 million. Of this number, 3.4 million reside in the West Bank. The population of Gaza has dropped by roughly 160,000, bringing the total to about 2.1 million. Notably, over one million children under the age of 18 make up 47% of Gaza’s total population.

The Impact of Ongoing Military Operations

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli military operations in Gaza have led to significant loss of life. Estimates suggest that more than 40,000 Palestinians have died, with thousands more reported missing. The situation remains dire as the conflict continues, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

This ongoing conflict highlights the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the humanitarian needs of the affected population.
