The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the recent vote by the Israeli Knesset, which endorsed a controversial law that prohibits the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from operating in occupied East Jerusalem. This law aims to revoke the privileges and immunities granted to UNRWA under United Nations General Assembly resolutions. The OIC views this action as part of Israel’s broader efforts to undermine the Palestinian refugee issue and their inherent right to return, constituting a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter.
The OIC has expressed grave concerns regarding the implications of these Israeli actions on UNRWA’s ability to provide essential services to Palestinian refugees. The organization emphasized that ongoing Israeli attacks on UNRWA facilities, staff, and the thousands of displaced individuals seeking refuge in its schools will not alter the legal status of UNRWA. The agency operates under a clear international mandate established by UN General Assembly resolutions.
In light of these developments, the OIC urges the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities in safeguarding UNRWA and its vital role in delivering essential services to millions of Palestinian refugees. The OIC insists that the international community must ensure the protection of their rights until a just and mutually agreed solution is reached in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
This condemnation highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the Palestinian refugee issue and underscores the need for sustained international attention and intervention to protect vulnerable populations in conflict zones.
