Yemen’s Ministry of Human Rights Welcomes OIC Statement on Houthi Violations

The Yemen Ministry of Human Rights has expressed its approval of the recent statement issued by the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The statement clearly condemns the severe and systematic violations committed by the Houthi militia, which receives support from the Iranian regime, against civilians. The ministry emphasized the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law and human rights standards while calling for an end to impunity.

Recognition of Human Rights Efforts

The ministry praised the professional and human rights role of the OIC commission, recognizing it as the specialized human rights mechanism of the organization. It commended the commission’s efforts to promote respect for human rights and to establish principles of justice and the rule of law within the Islamic world.

Acknowledgment of Humanitarian Crisis

The ministry highlighted the statement’s deep understanding of the humanitarian tragedy caused by the militia’s violations. It noted the explicit condemnation of crimes such as extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, torture, child recruitment, attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, and landmine planting. These violations have been documented by the ministry and relevant national authorities over the years of the ongoing conflict.

Support for National Efforts

The ministry affirmed that the conclusions drawn from the statement represent significant support for national efforts aimed at documenting violations, ensuring justice for victims, and enhancing accountability. It reflects a growing consensus among regional organizations regarding the severity of violations occurring in Yemen and the collective responsibility to protect civilians and support legitimate state institutions.

Call for International Action

The ministry reiterated its call to the international community and regional organizations to build on the statement’s content. It urged them to take more effective steps to pressure the Houthi militia to cease its violations, release all arbitrarily detained individuals, and ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid. Furthermore, it emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for these violations, contributing to the establishment of justice, the protection of human rights, the restoration of state institutions, and the achievement of lasting peace in Yemen.
