Yemen's Education Ministry Hosts Workshop on National Strategy for Out-of-School Children

The Ministry of Education in Yemen organized a workshop today in the temporary capital, Aden, focusing on the National Strategy for Out-of-School Children. This initiative, conducted in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), received funding from the Government of Japan and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

Importance of the Strategy

Minister of Education, Tarek Al-Akbari, emphasized the significance of this strategy for addressing the issue of out-of-school children in Yemen. He stated that education represents a national and moral responsibility. The Ministry aims to develop appropriate recommendations and solutions through this strategy to facilitate the reintegration of children into schools, both in the short and long term. Al-Akbari stressed the importance of collaboration among all partners to ensure the strategy’s effectiveness.

Acknowledgment of Collaborative Efforts

Minister Al-Akbari praised the efforts of the Ministry’s technical and supervisory committees for completing a study on the status of out-of-school children and for preparing this strategy. He acknowledged the contributions of distinguished academic leaders and experts involved in the process. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to UNICEF for its support of the educational sector, as well as to the funding agencies, including the Government of Japan and SIDA.

UNICEF’s Role and Outreach

Nasser Qaddoura, the Acting Director of UNICEF’s office in Aden, highlighted that the development of this strategy involved ten districts across several governorates. He thanked the Ministry of Education for its efforts in creating a strategy that will systematically and scientifically address the challenges faced by out-of-school children.

This workshop marks a significant step towards improving educational access for children in Yemen, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to receive an education.
