Minister of Youth and Sports Discusses Infrastructure Projects with UNOPS

On Monday, Minister of Youth and Sports Nayef Al-Bakri met with Khaled Salem Saleh, a program advisor from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The two discussed potential interventions in infrastructure projects and explored avenues for collaboration between the ministry and UNOPS.

Review of Infrastructure Projects

During the meeting, Al-Bakri highlighted several infrastructure projects that suffered destruction during the conflict instigated by the Houthi militia in Aden and other provinces. He noted that despite the ongoing war and the economic challenges facing the country, the ministry successfully rehabilitated and rebuilt many sports facilities. Currently, some projects are still in progress, with completion rates exceeding 90%.

Youth Training and Development Programs

Al-Bakri emphasized the ministry’s commitment to implementing training and development programs for thousands of young people. He outlined strategic plans designed to meet the aspirations and needs of the youth. Additionally, he mentioned the ministry’s support for various sports federations and their participation in international competitions.

Building a Partnership with UNOPS

The minister underscored the importance of establishing a partnership with UNOPS to implement several infrastructure projects at the sports city in Aden. He praised UNOPS for its efforts and commitment to rehabilitating sports facilities and supporting youth programs, including providing essential sports equipment to clubs and federations.

UNOPS Commends Ministry’s Efforts

In response, the UNOPS representative commended the ministry’s leadership for its dedication to advancing sports initiatives in Yemen. He expressed UNOPS’s eagerness to foster fruitful collaboration with the ministry and to implement various joint programs.

The meeting also included key officials such as Khalid Mohsen Al-Khalifi, the Undersecretary for Sports, Dr. Azam Khalifa, the Deputy Minister, Dr. Hassan Abdul-Rahab, the head of the ministry’s technical office, and several other representatives from UNOPS.

This collaboration aims to enhance sports infrastructure and promote youth engagement in Yemen, paving the way for a brighter future for the country’s youth and sports sector.
