Today, Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, along with his accompanying delegation, visited Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. This visit forms part of their participation in the Water Governance and Desalination Conference held in the Netherlands. The minister aimed to gain insights into academic and scientific expertise in seawater desalination while addressing the severe water scarcity issues facing Aden.
During the visit, Minister Al-Sharjabi, along with specialists from the ministry, the local water and sanitation authority in Aden and Mukalla, the Environmental Protection Agency, and representatives from local authorities and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, attended a presentation by desalination expert Professor Marina Kennedy. The presentation highlighted global experiences and essential practices in desalination, emphasizing environmental considerations and the best methods to implement desalination programs. These programs aim to alleviate the water crisis in Aden without harming the surrounding environment.
Furthermore, Minister Al-Sharjabi engaged with the university’s administration to explore available training opportunities and various qualification programs offered by the institute for international students. The discussions focused on future coordination to train and qualify staff in the water sector, particularly in water resource management, desalination techniques, and renewable energy applications.
Minister Al-Sharjabi reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with Dutch counterparts. He emphasized the importance of knowledge exchange regarding desalination management and the best practices derived from successful global experiences in water sector development.
This visit underscores the ongoing efforts to address water scarcity in Aden through innovative solutions and international cooperation.
