Minister of Water and Environment Discusses Cooperation with FAO in Cairo

Cairo Meeting Focuses on Joint Projects

Today, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, Yemen’s Minister of Water and Environment, met with Dr. Abdulhakim Al-Wa’ar, the Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the Near East and North Africa. The meeting took place in Cairo and aimed to enhance collaboration and explore joint projects between Yemen and the FAO.

Ongoing Projects and Future Initiatives

During the discussion, the two officials reviewed several ongoing projects, including initiatives in Wadi Hajar and the Resilient Livelihoods Project in Protected Areas. They also examined a series of projects funded by the World Bank, which the FAO is implementing, as well as initiatives supported by the Global Environment Facility.

Additionally, they highlighted new projects focused on preparedness and adaptation, including an early warning system. Both parties agreed to strengthen their partnership by establishing common points of contact and scheduling regular meetings to improve the execution of joint projects.

Commitment to Sustainable Resource Management

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized the Yemeni government’s commitment to enhancing its partnership with the FAO. He noted that this collaboration aims to improve water resource management and implement vital priority projects. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of increasing coordination and information exchange to ensure project sustainability and maximize their positive impact on local communities.

Addressing Challenges in Yemen

Al-Sharjabi pointed out the significant challenges Yemen faces in water, environmental, and food security due to current conditions and climate change. He remarked that the partnership with the FAO and donor agencies presents a crucial opportunity to strengthen national institutions and expand project scopes, ultimately benefiting stability and sustainable development.

FAO’s Support and Future Coordination

In response, Dr. Al-Wa’ar praised the Ministry of Water and Environment for facilitating the FAO’s work and implementing joint programs. He reaffirmed the FAO’s commitment to continuing coordination with the ministry and relevant stakeholders to execute quality projects that enhance livelihoods, preserve natural resources, and bolster community resilience and productivity.
