Yemen Secures $9.9 Million for Climate Adaptation Project

The Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, announced that the Board of Directors of the Climate Adaptation Fund has approved a $9.9 million project. This initiative aims to enhance resilience against water scarcity and flooding in the Tuban Delta, located in Lahij Governorate.

Government Commitment to Climate Challenges

In a statement to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), Al-Sharjabi praised the Climate Adaptation Fund’s role in supporting the Yemeni government’s efforts to tackle climate challenges. He emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with international organizations to achieve sustainable development and support vulnerable communities.

Project Goals and Implementation

The project focuses on improving the Tuban Delta’s capacity to adapt to climate change. It will implement integrated water resource management using smart technologies to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of drinking water supplies. Additionally, the project will introduce modern irrigation systems to optimize water usage and ensure its sustainability for agricultural communities in the region, which is among the most affected by climate fluctuations in Yemen.

Collaborative Efforts for Institutional Capacity Building

Al-Sharjabi highlighted that the project will be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Environment, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, and relevant national authorities. This initiative aims to build institutional and community capacities while enhancing climate resilience in the water sector. Ultimately, it seeks to achieve water security and mitigate the impacts of escalating climate crises.

By investing in this vital project, Yemen takes a significant step toward addressing its pressing climate challenges and supporting its most vulnerable populations.
