Minister of Water and Environment Reviews Water Pumping Station Project in Aden

A Collaborative Effort with the World Bank

Today, Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, along with a delegation from the World Bank led by Regional Director for Yemen, Egypt, and Djibouti, Stefan Gimbart, and Country Director for Yemen, Dunya Abu Ghaida, assessed the progress of the water pumping station project in the Al-Barzakh area of Khormaksar district, Aden. The project also includes a new water reservoir with a capacity of 18,000 cubic meters.

Project Overview and Funding

During the visit, the delegation received a detailed briefing from the General Director of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in Aden, Engineer Mohammed Bakhebeira. The project, which costs approximately $1.765 million, receives funding from the World Bank and is supervised by the Urban Water and Sanitation Project under the Ministry of Water and Environment.

Key Components of the Project

The project entails the construction of a comprehensive water pumping station. This includes trenching for cables, laying pipelines, and executing specialized electrical works. Additionally, the project will supply and install eight horizontal pumps with flow rates of 230 liters per second and 100 liters per second. These enhancements aim to strengthen the water network’s capacity and improve its operational efficiency.

Importance of International Support

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized the significance of World Bank-funded projects in advancing the water and sanitation sectors. He highlighted the need for sustainable services for citizens, especially given the current challenges facing the country. He praised the strong partnership between the Yemeni government and the World Bank, recognizing it as a vital contributor to development efforts, particularly in the water sector.

Enhancing Water Distribution

Engineer Bakhebeira noted that this project represents a qualitative improvement in water distribution and direct pumping to existing systems. He explained that the new station will operate in tandem with the old station, alleviating its burden and enhancing the quality and efficiency of services provided.

The World Bank delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting such essential projects that enhance basic services for citizens in the water sector and address developmental needs.
