The National Higher Committee for Coordination and Follow-up on the National Emergency Plan to Combat Marine Pollution convened today in the temporary capital of Aden. The meeting, led by Minister of Transport Dr. Abdul Salam Humeid, focused on the recent incidents involving the targeting and sinking of two vessels, “Magic Seas” and “Infinity,” by Houthi militia in the Red Sea. The committee examined the environmental repercussions of these incidents and the necessary actions to address them.
During the meeting, Minister Humeid highlighted the escalating situation in the Red Sea, particularly following the sinking of three vessels, including the “Rubymar,” over the past two weeks. He noted that these ships collectively carried approximately 70,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, a hazardous chemical that poses significant risks to marine life, fisheries, and coral reefs.
Minister Humeid emphasized that these incidents occurred within the special economic zone of Yemen, warning that neighboring countries along the Red Sea would also face negative impacts. He called on regional nations, international maritime organizations, and United Nations agencies, including the UN Development Programme and the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, to support the Yemeni government in combating marine pollution. He urged these entities to assess the environmental effects and develop effective solutions.
In response to the situation, Minister Humeid instructed the General Authority for Maritime Affairs to establish an operations room. This initiative aims to enhance coordination and communication with the regional information exchange center and member states. The goal is to implement technical and logistical measures to mitigate the consequences of the sunken vessels, ensuring the protection of the environment and marine resources.
The committee’s proactive approach underscores the urgency of addressing marine pollution and safeguarding the ecological balance in the Red Sea.
