On Tuesday, Ahmed Lamlas, the Minister of State and Governor of Aden, met with Dina Zorba, the UN Women Representative in Yemen, along with her accompanying delegation. This meeting aimed to address pressing issues affecting women in Aden and explore collaborative efforts to enhance women’s empowerment.
During the meeting, which included the presence of Ghassan Al-Zamki, the Deputy Governor for Project Affairs, participants discussed various challenges women face in the temporary capital. They highlighted the need for initiatives that promote women’s economic and administrative empowerment. The discussions also emphasized the importance of establishing a permanent committee to coordinate and support women’s issues, ensuring their protection.
The meeting underscored the critical problems women encounter in Aden, including the essential resources required for their social and economic empowerment. A significant focus was placed on the "Support for Women in Yemen" project, which aims to expand training, rehabilitation, and employment opportunities for women. The local authority expressed its commitment to forming genuine partnerships with international organizations and the private sector to create sustainable training and employment opportunities for women, contributing to community stability and growth.
Dina Zorba expressed her enthusiasm for the close collaboration with local leadership in Aden. She praised the local authority’s openness and support for women’s issues. Zorba reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to implementing quality projects in partnership with local authorities and relevant stakeholders, aiming to create a fair and safe environment that enhances women’s participation in public life.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed to organize a photo exhibition that documents women’s history and highlights their significant roles in Aden. Additionally, they planned to launch a permanent advocacy campaign for women, which will include developmental and awareness projects, as well as initiatives to increase women’s involvement in institutional and developmental work.
The meeting also saw the participation of Intisar Murshid, Director of the Planning and International Cooperation Office in Aden; Ishtiaq Mohammed Saad, Director of the General Administration for Women’s Development; and Maisa Ashish, Director of Training and Rehabilitation at the Governorate’s headquarters.
This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards empowering women in Aden, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
