Minister Discusses World Bank Projects in Yemen

In a significant meeting held today in Aden, Yemen’s interim capital, Dr. Waed Badhieb, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, engaged with Dunya Abou Ghida, the World Bank’s Country Director for Yemen. The discussion focused on the current portfolio of World Bank projects in Yemen and explored avenues for future collaboration.

Current Projects and Challenges

The meeting included key officials from the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, such as Undersecretary for Engineering Projects, Waseela Al-Sharmini, Undersecretary for International Cooperation, Omar Abdulaziz, and Nasser Al-Huraibi from the Ministry of Finance. Participants reviewed the World Bank’s ongoing projects in Yemen, which span essential services, economic recovery, and social protection. They also addressed the progress of existing initiatives, such as human capital development, while identifying challenges hindering implementation and strategies to overcome them.

Emphasis on Development and Coordination

Minister Badhieb highlighted the vital role of the World Bank in supporting Yemen’s development. He stressed the need to accelerate the execution of current projects and expand interventions to reach more regions and beneficiaries. Furthermore, he called for enhanced coordination among project implementers to maximize the benefits of available resources.

Importance of Project Evaluation and Future Opportunities

The Minister underscored the importance of evaluating projects executed by the World Bank to ensure they align with the government’s priority needs. He pointed out the necessity of increasing opportunities for collaboration in new areas and the potential for providing additional technical and institutional support to government entities.

Commitment to Support Yemen’s Recovery

In response, Dunya Abou Ghida reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to continue supporting Yemen. She noted that the institution is developing new programs that address urgent needs and bolster economic recovery efforts.

This meeting marks a crucial step in enhancing cooperation between Yemen and the World Bank, aiming to improve the lives of millions through effective project implementation and strategic partnerships.
