Minister of Planning Discusses Bilateral Cooperation with World Bank and UNDP

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Mohammed Al-Faqmi, held a meeting today with Dina Abu Ghaida, the World Bank Office Director for Yemen, and Nora Awadallah, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yemen. The discussion focused on enhancing coordination and joint cooperation.

Framework for Joint Cooperation

The virtual meeting reviewed the framework for joint cooperation that both institutions signed at the global level. Yemen has been selected as one of five leading countries to implement this framework, alongside Nepal, Haiti, Lebanon, and Ghana. The official launch is set to occur during a ministerial meeting in Bangkok, coinciding with the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in 2026.

Importance of Yemen’s Selection

Minister Al-Faqmi emphasized that Yemen’s selection as a leading country in this framework highlights the significance of the Yemeni file for both institutions. He underscored the depth of the ongoing developmental partnership with the Republic of Yemen. Furthermore, he stressed the necessity for the government and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation to act as a key partner in designing the framework’s components.

Government Priorities

During the meeting, the Minister outlined the Yemeni government’s priorities for the upcoming phase. These include accelerating the implementation of the existing joint portfolio and ensuring full alignment with the National Economic and Social Recovery Plan (2027-2029), which the government is currently preparing. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of relying on national institutions and systems for execution.

Commitment to Coordination

Both the World Bank Office Director for Yemen and the UNDP Resident Representative expressed their appreciation for the role of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation as the main governmental partner. They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing coordination with the ministry at all stages of designing and implementing the framework, ensuring it serves the developmental priorities of the Republic of Yemen.
