The Minister of Information calls for urgent international action following the Houthi attack on a Liberian ship south of Hodeidah.

Yemeni Minister Condemns Houthi Attack on Liberian-Flagged Vessel

Minister’s Strong Denunciation

Yemeni Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Muammar Al-Eryani, has condemned the recent terrorist attack carried out by the Iran-aligned Houthi militia. The assault targeted a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea, approximately 49 nautical miles southwest of the city of Al-Hudaydah, while the vessel was sailing northward.

Threat to International Shipping

In a press statement, Al-Eryani emphasized that this treacherous act highlights the Houthis’ ongoing commitment to jeopardizing international shipping routes, energy security, and food supplies. The Red Sea serves as one of the world’s most critical waterways, making such threats particularly alarming.

Details of the Attack

According to available information, the attack occurred at 8 PM local time at coordinates (14° 28’ 14” N, 42° 8’ 52” E). Two fast boats and armed drones approached the vessel, opening fire. The ship’s armed protection team responded, resulting in injuries to two crew members and the reported disappearance of two others. The ship’s engines reportedly failed, causing it to drift, which poses a significant risk of a humanitarian and environmental disaster in the Red Sea.

Escalating Violence

Al-Eryani noted that this incident marks the second attack by the Houthi militia within 24 hours, allegedly orchestrated and equipped by the Iranian regime. This pattern underscores the militia’s disregard for international community efforts and highlights the threat they pose to maritime safety. The attack endangers the lives of civilians working on commercial vessels and threatens regional and global stability.

Call for International Action

The minister urged the international community, the United Nations, and permanent members of the Security Council to take a firm stance. He called for practical measures to deter the Houthi militia and hold them accountable for these terrorist acts. Al-Eryani stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait to ensure regional security and prevent the repercussions of such aggressive actions.
