Tragic Suicide of Young Woman Sparks Outrage in Yemen

A young woman named Fidaa took her own life on Saturday in the village of Al-Harounia, located in the Al-Munirah district of northern Al-Hudaydah Governorate. Local sources report that her suicide followed a harrowing experience of extortion by a member of the Houthi militia.

Extortion and Threats

According to reports, an individual named Yusuf Salem Doum obtained private photos of Fidaa. He subsequently used these images to threaten and extort her, leading to her tragic decision to end her life. Activists on social media have circulated a note allegedly written by Fidaa, in which she expressed her apologies to her family and called for justice against her tormentor.

Human Rights Office Condemns the Act

The Human Rights Office in Al-Hudaydah condemned the incident in the strongest terms. They emphasized that this act represents a severe violation of human rights and international laws. Furthermore, it highlights the alarming level of abuse faced by women and girls in areas controlled by the Houthis.

Calls for Accountability

The office held both the perpetrator and the Houthi militia fully responsible for the incident. They demanded a transparent investigation to ensure accountability for those involved. Additionally, they urged the international community and human rights organizations to take immediate action to protect women and provide legal and psychological support to the victim’s family.

Upholding Human Dignity

The statement underscored that protecting human dignity and the rights of women to live freely is a non-negotiable priority. It warned that silence regarding such crimes fosters a culture of impunity and threatens societal peace.
