Cairo, Egypt – Today, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri, inaugurated the opening workshop for a new food security project in Yemen. The event took place in Cairo and featured Dr. Ali Abu Sabaa, Director General of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). This initiative, funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has a total budget of €2.5 million.
The workshop aims to enhance agricultural research and build capacity in the sectors of agriculture, small ruminant production, and dairy products. Participants will explore innovative strategies to improve food security in Yemen.
Minister Al-Saqtri emphasized the project’s importance as a transformative intervention for Yemen’s agricultural sector. He noted that it bridges scientific research with practical agricultural work. The project will focus on developing value chains, improving resource management, and building local capacities. These efforts aim to empower farmers and livestock breeders, enabling them to achieve self-reliance and enhance their productivity.
The workshop will also address the mechanisms for project implementation. Participants will outline the next steps in coordination with the Ministry and partner institutions. This collaborative approach aims to ensure sustainable impact and achieve the desired results on the ground.
By fostering collaboration and innovation, this project represents a significant step toward improving food security in Yemen.
