The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries emphasizes the need for integrated water management to address war impacts and climate change.

Minister Emphasizes Integrated Water Resource Management in Yemen

Importance of Water Resource Management

In a recent virtual meeting, Yemen’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Major General Salem Al-Saqtri, highlighted the critical need for integrated water resource management. This approach includes optimizing water consumption, enhancing irrigation efficiency, protecting water rights, and managing watersheds from source to outlet. Additionally, it focuses on maximizing the use of surface water and seasonal floods.

Collaboration with International Partners

Al-Saqtri delivered his remarks during a coordination meeting organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Yemen, in collaboration with the World Bank and the Coalition for Good. The meeting aimed to strengthen integrated water resource management efforts in the country. The Minister emphasized the importance of national coordination among government entities and international partners. He called for the development of modern digital platforms to collect and analyze data related to water and food security. This initiative, he noted, would play a vital role in guiding developmental interventions and achieving sustainable management of water and land resources.

Challenges Facing Yemen’s Water Resources

Yemen faces significant challenges due to its limited water and agricultural resources. The country ranks among the most affected by climate change, experiencing devastating hurricanes, floods, and recurring droughts. The ongoing armed conflict, which has persisted for nearly a decade, has exacerbated these challenges. It has led to the collapse of much of the agricultural and fishery infrastructure, impacting the livelihoods of approximately 70% of the population who rely on these vital sectors.

Appreciation for Dutch Support

Minister Al-Saqtri expressed gratitude for the support provided by the Netherlands and its embassy in Yemen. He acknowledged their efforts to assist in recovery from the war’s impacts and the challenges posed by climate change. He specifically praised the contributions of Jan Peter, the Dutch embassy’s secretary, for his dedicated work during his tenure in Yemen.

Looking Ahead: Recommendations for Sustainable Management

The Minister expressed hope that the meeting would yield practical recommendations to enhance food security and sustainably manage water resources. He emphasized the importance of leveraging successful experiences, modern technologies, innovation, and investment in irrigation and water sectors. Al-Saqtri believes that the outcomes of this workshop will leave a positive mark on Jan Peter’s legacy in Yemen.
