Health Ministry Warns of Serious Consequences from Houthi Vaccine Blockade
The Ministry of Public Health and Population has issued a stark warning regarding the dangerous repercussions of the Houthi militia’s ongoing obstruction of vaccine distribution and immunization services in areas under their control. This situation threatens to deny nearly five million children access to life-saving routine vaccinations, exposing them to preventable epidemic diseases.
Vaccination as a Fundamental Right
The Ministry emphasized that immunization is a fundamental health right for every Yemeni child. Vaccines represent one of the most crucial health interventions that have significantly reduced mortality and disease rates among children over the decades. The Ministry called for the health sector to remain neutral, urging that vaccines should not be politicized or used as leverage, as children are the primary victims of these disruptions.
Impact of Houthi Restrictions
The Ministry explained that the failure of immunization services in Houthi-controlled areas stems from various restrictions and interventions affecting the National Immunization Program and its health partners. These include the disruption of vaccination campaigns, limitations on the movement of health teams, and interference with humanitarian organizations’ activities. Additionally, the detention of UN and international staff has led to the reduction and suspension of some humanitarian and health activities, directly impacting the continuity of vaccine delivery to children.
Availability of Vaccines
The Ministry confirmed that vaccines intended for all provinces, including those under militia control, are available through health sector partners according to international supply mechanisms. However, imposed obstacles on receiving, transporting, and distributing these vaccines have prevented them from reaching the intended recipients in accordance with technical and medical standards.
Commitment to Vaccine Distribution
The Ministry reiterated its full readiness to coordinate with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, GAVI, and all partners to ensure that vaccines reach all children without discrimination. It called for necessary guarantees to facilitate the delivery, storage, and distribution of vaccines according to international standards, ensuring the integrity of the cold chain and free access for beneficiaries.
Call for Safe Access for Health Teams
The Ministry also urged the empowerment of international organizations and health teams to gain safe and unconditional access to health facilities and targeted communities. It stressed the importance of allowing technical oversight of immunization programs to build trust and ensure that vaccines reach those in need.
Risks of Continued Immunization Disruption
The Ministry warned that the ongoing disruption of immunization services could lead to widening immunity gaps and a resurgence of serious preventable diseases, such as polio, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus. Parents are encouraged to ensure their children complete their vaccination schedules according to national guidelines. The Ministry reassured the public that vaccines are safe, effective, and free, representing the first line of defense in protecting children from epidemic diseases.
