The Governor of Taiz discusses water project support with the UN Resident Coordinator.

Enhancing Humanitarian Efforts in Taiz: A Collaborative Approach

Meeting Overview

Today, Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan met with Julian Harnis, the UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen, to discuss strategies for improving humanitarian interventions in water, sanitation, and health sectors. The meeting included the participation of Samir Abdul Wahid, the director of the local water authority, along with several executive office directors.

Welcoming Remarks and Acknowledgments

Governor Shamsan warmly welcomed Harnis and his accompanying delegation. He praised the United Nations for its ongoing support of water and sanitation projects, as well as health initiatives in the region. Shamsan highlighted the current arrangements to pump water into the authority’s reservoirs from the main basins in Al-Hawban. This effort involves collaboration with local authorities and civil society organizations.

Addressing Water Scarcity Challenges

During the meeting, Shamsan addressed the severe water shortages facing the city, exacerbated by delayed rainfall. He pointed out that Houthi militias continue to control key water sources and basins. The available wells are shallow and rely entirely on seasonal rains. The governor emphasized the local authority’s commitment to finding sustainable and long-term solutions to this pressing crisis.

UN Efforts and Future Plans

In response, Harnis outlined the UN’s ongoing efforts to support water, sanitation, and health projects. He noted the continuous collaboration with local authority offices to implement these initiatives. This includes efforts to restore water pumping, maintain networks, and cover operational costs. Harnis also mentioned the development of detailed plans to ensure a sustainable water supply from Al-Hawban to the city.

Collaborative Framework for Future Interventions

Harnis confirmed that several interventions would be discussed and organized within the high committee led by the governor. This committee will also include technical subcommittees, private sector representatives, civil society organizations, and relevant government agencies. This collaborative approach aims to address the urgent needs of Taiz residents effectively.

Conclusion

The meeting between Governor Shamsan and UN Coordinator Harnis marks a significant step toward enhancing humanitarian efforts in Taiz. By focusing on sustainable solutions and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, both parties aim to alleviate the ongoing water crisis and improve health and sanitation conditions in the region.
