The Yemeni government has urgently appealed to friendly nations and international organizations for support in addressing the country’s pressing economic and service-related challenges. This call comes as Yemen faces significant hurdles in achieving financial stability and institutional resilience.
In a statement delivered to the United Nations Security Council by Yemen’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, the government emphasized that immediate support is crucial. The ongoing crises, exacerbated by Houthi attacks on oil export ports, have led to a staggering loss of approximately 70% of the state’s public resources. The Yemeni government expressed deep appreciation for the support from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, highlighting their continuous contributions to humanitarian and developmental efforts.
The Yemeni government described the current situation as a critical juncture following eleven years of war instigated by Houthi militias. This conflict has devastated the hopes and aspirations of a population yearning for security, stability, dignity, and equal citizenship. The government remains committed to building a civil state that reflects Yemen’s rich history and regional significance.
Despite the efforts of the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government to pursue peace, the Houthi militias continue to obstruct these initiatives. Their actions prolong the conflict and deepen the humanitarian and economic crises, undermining security in Yemen and the broader region.
The Yemeni government previously addressed the Security Council regarding Iran’s blatant interference in Yemen’s affairs. This includes repeated violations of the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions, particularly concerning the systematic breaches of sanctions imposed under Resolutions 2140 (2014) and 2216 (2015). The ongoing smuggling of Iranian weapons to the Houthis poses a significant threat to both national and regional security.
Recent reports indicate that Yemeni authorities have intercepted numerous shipments of weapons and drones intended for the Houthis. These incidents underscore the persistent financing and arming of these militias, which jeopardizes security in Yemen and beyond. The Iranian regime appears intent on further investing in the Houthis as part of its expansionist agenda, complicating efforts for a comprehensive political settlement.
The Yemeni government reiterated its call for the international community, particularly the Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities. It urged the implementation of relevant resolutions, especially Resolutions 2216 (2015) and 2140 (2014), to deter Iranian interventions and halt arms smuggling to the Houthis.
Despite the complex situation, the Yemeni government, with support from the Presidential Leadership Council, is advancing economic, financial, and administrative reforms. These efforts aim to stabilize the national currency, improve local revenues, and address critical sector imbalances. The government is also implementing measures to protect vulnerable populations and ensure that improvements in currency value positively impact the cost of essential goods and services.
The ongoing war has plunged millions of Yemenis into poverty and food insecurity, displacing over 4.5 million people into harsh living conditions. The compounded effects of these crises, along with climate change challenges, have intensified the need for humanitarian assistance.
The Yemeni government appreciates the efforts to alleviate humanitarian suffering but urges the international community and the UN to enhance support for humanitarian responses in Yemen. It seeks to bridge the existing funding gap and looks forward to the upcoming International Food Security Conference, scheduled for October, which aims to foster collaboration with regional and international partners.
The Yemeni government reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful resolution and supports all regional and international efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and just peace based on agreed-upon political solutions, particularly Security Council Resolution 2216 (2015). It aims to build a constructive strategic partnership with the international community to ensure security, stability, and peace in Yemen while addressing threats to maritime navigation and global trade.
The Yemeni government continues to navigate these challenges with resilience, seeking the support necessary to secure a brighter future for its citizens.
