The European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, confirmed the European Union’s commitment to advancing the membership process for Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, and Moldova. He emphasized that future membership will depend on strategic and security alignment with the EU.
Várhelyi noted that the decision by member states of the Committee of Permanent Representatives paves the way for four international governmental conferences with the four countries in the coming days. This marks the third time since June that these four conferences will occur simultaneously.
He added that this development signals a rapid acceleration in the enlargement process, allowing candidate countries to achieve tangible results on their path to membership.
Várhelyi highlighted that Ukraine’s path reflects an “exceptional determination” to join the European Union.
The European Commissioner stressed the increasing importance of security considerations in the enlargement process. He affirmed that candidate countries that align strategically with the EU will be the ones able to complete their membership journey.
