The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has called for an immediate and independent international investigation into alleged illegal prisons and detention centers discovered in southern Yemen. These facilities reportedly fell under the control of Emirati forces in the past. The organization highlighted evidence suggesting the use of these sites for torture and inhumane treatment, corroborated by testimonies from former detainees.
In a recent statement, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor emphasized that the transfer of control over these sites to government forces presents a genuine opportunity to activate international accountability mechanisms. The organization urged authorities to preserve the integrity of these locations, prevent any tampering, and allow fact-finding teams, particularly the UN team focused on enforced disappearances, to access them without obstruction.
The statement also pointed to potential detention sites in the provinces of Aden, Lahij, Al-Dhale, and Hadramaut. Among these, facilities in the Al-Dabba area of Mukalla reportedly feature cramped and harsh cells that may constitute prohibited torture under international law.
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor asserted that repeated denials from Abu Dhabi regarding the existence of secret prisons are insufficient, given the documented evidence and consistent testimonies. The organization called for the establishment of an independent international committee to investigate these allegations, hold accountable those involved in the violations, and ensure justice for the victims while preventing any party from evading punishment.
