President Alimi Calls for International Action Against Houthi Militias

President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, has officially requested United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to support international efforts through the Security Council to designate Houthi militias as a terrorist organization. He emphasized the need to enforce an arms embargo against them, cut off their funding sources, and hold accountable those who support them and are responsible for their violations.

Escalating Terrorism and Its Impact

This request came during a phone call where President Alimi discussed the current national situation amid the escalating terrorist actions led by Houthi militias and their implications for international peace and security. He informed the Secretary-General about the recent Houthi terrorist activities, including missile and drone attacks on state institutions and civilian facilities. The president highlighted the expansion of assaults on cities and villages, coinciding with the ongoing siege of Taiz and bombardment of residential neighborhoods. These actions have resulted in thousands of casualties, including civilians and children, whom the militias have forced into combat zones.

Government’s Commitment to Peace

President Alimi asserted that the Yemeni government has responsibly engaged with initiatives aimed at ending the war. However, he noted that Houthi militias continue to escalate violence and exploit ceasefires and political efforts to reorganize their ranks and persist in their violations, including the detention of over seventy UN employees and the abduction of thousands of citizens.

Urgent Need for International Action

He stressed that the current phase requires the international community to move from condemnation to the full implementation of international legitimacy decisions. This includes ending the Houthi threat, lifting the siege on cities, and opening safe routes for civilians and humanitarian supplies.

Commitment to Sustainable Peace

The president reiterated the government’s commitment to a just and sustainable peace based on established references and international legitimacy decisions, which safeguard Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity while restoring state institutions.

UN Secretary-General’s Response

In response, Secretary-General Guterres condemned the Houthi attacks both within Yemen and across borders in the strongest terms. He expressed his rejection of the continued detention of UN personnel and public workers, along with all violations of international law. Guterres confirmed the UN’s commitment to providing stronger support to the Yemeni government and Saudi Arabia in addressing existing threats and continuing efforts to enhance security and stability.
