On Friday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, met with Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, Lavrov conveyed greetings from President Vladimir Putin. He extended congratulations to Yemen’s leadership, government, and people on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the September 26 Revolution.
The discussion highlighted the longstanding relationship between Yemen and Russia. Both leaders explored promising opportunities to expand and enhance cooperation across various sectors. This dialogue followed President Alimi’s fruitful visit to Moscow in May.
President Alimi praised the exceptional bilateral ties between Yemen and Russia. He acknowledged Russia’s support for Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy and its commitment to fostering peace and stability. Alimi also condemned the ongoing terrorist threats that jeopardize maritime security and international peace.
The meeting also addressed preparations for the first Russia-Arab Summit, scheduled for October, which will include Yemen’s participation.
President Alimi briefed Lavrov on the current local situation and the devastating impacts of the war ignited by Houthi militias. He highlighted the serious threats to maritime navigation and shipping, as well as severe human rights violations, including the detention and disappearance of numerous UN agency staff and international mission members.
The President reaffirmed the commitment of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to a fair, comprehensive, and sustainable peace process. This commitment aligns with the agreed-upon national, regional, and international references, particularly UN Resolution 2216.
The meeting included key figures such as Dr. Shaif Al-Zandani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Abdullah Al-Saadi, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Major General Saleh Al-Maqaleh, Director of the President’s Office. The Russian delegation featured Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
This meeting underscores the ongoing dialogue between Yemen and Russia, focusing on mutual interests and regional stability.
