The “C-Track” platform breach affects court records in 11 U.S. states and Canada.

Cybersecurity Breach Affects C-Track Platform in U.S. and Canada

Thomson Reuters has reported a serious cybersecurity incident involving its C-Track judicial platform. This breach allowed unauthorized access to files containing court records, names, and personal data. The incident impacted judicial entities in 11 U.S. states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada.

Details of the Breach

The company discovered the attack on June 30. An official notice and statements from the heads of three courts in Ontario revealed that an unauthorized party accessed some files on the platform as early as March. Ontario courts utilize the C-Track platform for digital record management, prompting local authorities to coordinate with the Department of Justice to contain the unauthorized activity.

Affected States

According to West Publishing, a division of Thomson Reuters, the breach affected court systems in the following states: Alabama, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, New Hampshire, Wyoming, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Company Response

Thomson Reuters has taken several measures in response to the breach:

  • Contained the unauthorized activity
  • Engaged external cybersecurity experts
  • Notified law enforcement authorities
  • Enhanced security for the C-Track environment
  • Informed affected clients

A company spokesperson confirmed that the incident did not disrupt the platform’s operations, and services continue to function securely.

Nature of the Compromised Data

The extent of the compromised information remains unclear. However, the judicial statement suggests that personal data of individuals involved in lawsuits or mentioned in official documents may have leaked.

Next Steps

Thomson Reuters Canada announced plans to establish a communication center to address inquiries starting September 4. The company continues to respond to questions from clients in both the United States and Canada.
