The Arab League has urged the international community to take swift and decisive action against the Israeli Knesset’s recent decision to prohibit the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from operating in the occupied Palestinian territories. This call aims to renew the agency’s international mandate, allowing it to continue its humanitarian and political role as a symbol of the refugee crisis.
During a joint meeting of the Arab League, the African Union, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Ambassador Saeed Abu Ali, the Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and Arab Occupied Territories, emphasized the need for donor nations to maintain financial support for UNRWA. He highlighted the exceptional circumstances currently facing the Gaza Strip and reaffirmed the agency’s critical role in delivering and distributing humanitarian aid. Furthermore, he called for an end to the distribution mechanisms employed by the “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,” which operates under Israeli occupation.
Ambassador Abu Ali condemned the Israeli Knesset’s decision as a blatant violation of international will and humanitarian values. He argued that this move aims to undermine generations of Palestinians who rely on UNRWA for survival amid catastrophic humanitarian conditions. The decision represents a step toward erasing the Palestinian refugee issue and denying their right to return to their homes and properties, particularly in Gaza. He noted that the Israeli occupation deliberately cuts off vital lifelines for Palestinian relief efforts.
The Arab League’s call to action highlights the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing the plight of Palestinian refugees. As the situation in Gaza deteriorates, the international community must respond promptly to ensure that UNRWA can continue its essential work.
