Minister Discusses Supply Chain Collaboration with FAO Official
Sana’a, Yemen – Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri, met with Maximo Torero, Assistant Director-General for Logistics at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to explore ways to enhance cooperation in supply chains and logistics. This discussion took place during the FAO’s Global Conference on Smart Agriculture.
Accelerating Agricultural and Fisheries Projects
During their meeting, both parties focused on mechanisms to expedite the implementation of agricultural, fisheries, irrigation, and livestock projects in Yemen. They emphasized the importance of improving developmental interventions and ensuring timely access to inputs and services for beneficiaries. Minister Al-Saqtri highlighted the FAO’s role as a key technical partner for the ministry, given its expertise in agriculture, irrigation, livestock, fisheries, food security, and climate change. He expressed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening direct coordination with the FAO office in Yemen and facilitating the entry of agricultural inputs along with associated customs and tax exemptions.
FAO’s Commitment to Yemen
Torero reaffirmed the FAO’s special priority for Yemen. He noted that the organization is working to update procurement policies and supply chains, granting its Yemen office broader authority to expedite processes and enhance execution efficiency while maintaining quality and transparency. He explained that the FAO’s reliance on local procurement supports the national economy, reduces costs, and increases the number of beneficiaries.
Importance of Technical Coordination
Both Al-Saqtri and Torero stressed the necessity of prior technical coordination with the ministry’s sectors when preparing technical specifications for agricultural inputs, equipment, and livestock supplies. This approach ensures that these resources meet local community needs while achieving quality and sustainability in project implementation.
