Sudan Shuts Qalabat Border Crossing with Ethiopia

Sudan Shuts Down Al-Qalabat Border Crossing with Ethiopia Amidst Militia Takeover

In a significant development reported on Monday, Sudanese military sources confirmed that Sudan has closed the Al-Qalabat border crossing with Ethiopia. This action comes in response to the takeover of the crossing on the Ethiopian side by the Fano militias, a rebel group operating in the Amhara region.

Border Closure Halts Trade and Travel

Military sources informed Sudan Tribune that the Sudanese authorities in the Gedaref state, located in eastern Sudan, made the decision to shut down the Al-Qalabat border crossing. Consequently, this closure has brought a halt to the border trade activities and travel procedures between Sudan and Ethiopia. The move underscores the escalating tensions and the complex security dynamics in the region.

Sudanese Authorities Respond

In a related development, the Sudanese authorities allowed members of the Ethiopian federal police and army, who were stationed at the crossing, to enter Sudanese territory after being disarmed. This decision reflects the intricate balance Sudan is attempting to maintain amidst the ongoing conflict. Additionally, the Fano militias permitted Sudanese citizens, who were stranded within the border limits, to travel and leave the area, indicating a nuanced approach to civilian movement in the conflict zone.

Fano Militias Assert Control

Sources have highlighted that the Fano militias have effectively taken control of the Metema Yohannes area in the Ethiopian region of Amhara, adjacent to the Sudanese city of Al-Qalabat in Gedaref state. This strategic move by the militias aims to cut off supplies of food and fuel coming from Sudan to the Amhara region, thereby tightening their grip on the territory and declaring complete dominance over the Amhara region.

Local Solidarity and Ethiopian Army’s Position

There is reported solidarity among Ethiopian residents and traders in Metema with the Fano militias, facilitating their control over the area and the commercial movement. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian army has positioned itself in the Shihedi province, maintaining control over that region. These developments are part of a broader conflict that raises concerns about the security and humanitarian situation for thousands of Sudanese refugees in the Metema area of Ethiopia.

Implications for the Region

The closure of the Al-Qalabat border crossing and the ensuing events mark a critical juncture in the Sudan-Ethiopia relations, with potential implications for the security and humanitarian situation in the region. As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that ensures the safety and well-being of the affected populations.

This incident underscores the volatile nature of border politics in Africa and the significant impact of militia activities on regional stability and security.
