South Korea Considers New Investment Fund from Semiconductor Tax Surplus

A senior government official announced that South Korea is exploring the establishment of a new investment fund. This fund will utilize the extraordinary tax revenue generated by the booming semiconductor sector. The initiative aims to finance long-term economic growth and bolster future development engines in the country.

The Importance of Reinvesting Tax Surplus

During a high-level government-party meeting, Kang Hoon-seok, chief of staff to President Lee Jae-myung, emphasized the need to reinvest the tax surplus from the semiconductor industry into bold future projects. These initiatives include supporting three recently announced major projects, addressing severe economic disparities, aiding housing and startups, and creating job opportunities for the youth.

Capitalizing on Global Demand

Bloomberg reported that the proposed fund reflects the South Korean president’s desire to leverage increasing tax revenues from the global demand for artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies. This fund aims to ensure economic sustainability and leave a lasting economic legacy.

Record Revenue Projections

Analysts predict that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are on track to achieve record operating profits this year. Their annual tax contributions could exceed 100 trillion won (approximately $65 billion), a figure Seoul had initially anticipated for total corporate taxes by 2026.

Major AI Projects Unveiled

Last week, President Lee revealed an initiative involving three massive projects that will entail significant investments in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and data centers. The total investment amounts to 1,350 trillion won (around $880 billion) from major companies like Samsung and SK Hynix.

The establishment of the new fund requires parliamentary approval, and discussions regarding its details and management structure are ongoing within the government.
