Prime Minister Chairs Meeting of the Supreme Medical Council in Aden

On Monday, Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak led a meeting of the Supreme Medical Council in the temporary capital of Aden. The meeting included the Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Qassem Baheebah.

Focus on Professional Efforts and Challenges

The meeting aimed to discuss the council’s professional and regulatory efforts over the past period. Participants addressed the challenges the council faces and proposed solutions to enhance its capabilities. The discussions emphasized the importance of monitoring and enforcing laws related to medical professions, protecting patient rights, and regulating the performance of healthcare practitioners.

Strengthening the Healthcare Sector

Prime Minister bin Mubarak highlighted the critical role of the Supreme Medical Council in organizing and developing the healthcare sector in liberated areas. He stressed the need to improve medical services and protect them from any form of malpractice. Furthermore, he underscored the importance of building public trust in national medical and health professionals, as well as in relevant scientific and educational institutions. He acknowledged the scientific integrity and ethical responsibility that healthcare workers bear, especially under challenging conditions.

Government Commitment to Health

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing health, despite ongoing challenges. He emphasized the need to support medical centers and councils to enhance service quality and provide a safe and dignified healthcare environment for every Yemeni citizen.

Institutional Development and Funding

Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak urged the completion of institutional development for the Supreme Medical Council in liberated areas. He called for the council to fulfill its responsibilities in organizing the healthcare sector, issuing licenses, and overseeing medical facilities. He also stressed the importance of diversifying funding sources to meet existing needs, including directing international interventions based on urgent priorities.

Minister of Health and Council Members Speak

During the meeting, the Minister of Public Health and Population, along with the President and members of the Supreme Medical Council, expressed their appreciation for the Prime Minister’s support and attention to the healthcare sector. They discussed the challenges facing the council and proposed solutions to enhance its role as a strong and effective regulatory body that safeguards the rights of both doctors and patients.

Presentation of Council Activities

The meeting included a presentation on the council’s activities, revealing that the classification committee and licensing committee had issued 1,194 professional licenses. Additionally, the council referred 51 cases to the investigation and accountability committee by March, including 15 cases of death. The presentation also highlighted the challenges the Supreme Medical Council continues to face.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Public Health and Population Dr. Abdullah Dahan and several ministry officials.
