President Alimi Warns Against Reliance on Iranian Moderation Amid Regional Tensions

Meeting with U.S. Ambassador

On Thursday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, the head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed U.S. Ambassador Stephen Fagin for a critical discussion aimed at strengthening the partnership between Yemen and the United States. The meeting, which also included Council member Major General Mahmoud Subaihi, centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

During their discussions, both leaders highlighted the ongoing collaboration between Yemen and the U.S. and examined recent developments within the country, particularly the government’s comprehensive reform efforts. President Alimi underscored the importance of U.S. and international support to mitigate the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

Addressing Regional Threats

President Alimi reiterated the significance of the strategic partnership with the United States, particularly in countering cross-border threats and addressing Iran’s destabilizing behavior in the region. He emphasized that recent regional developments, especially Iran’s renewed aggressive actions, serve as clear evidence that the Iranian regime does not seek peace or stability.

Furthermore, he pointed out that experiences from Yemen and other regional nations illustrate that reliance on the moderation of Iranian behavior, without confronting its expansionist agenda, often results in increased escalation rather than peace. The President cited the Houthis’ recent provocative actions, including humanitarian threats and maritime risks, such as the hijacking of a vessel off Yemen’s coast, as indicators of this ongoing escalation.

Local Developments and Economic Reforms

In addition to addressing regional threats, President Alimi discussed advancements in local governance, particularly the economic and financial reforms supported by Saudi Arabia. He emphasized the need for unifying security and military decisions to enhance the effectiveness of state institutions at all levels.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to continue strengthening the partnership between Yemen and the United States. Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidential Office, also participated in the discussions.

This article underscores the ongoing collaboration between Yemen and the U.S. in tackling regional challenges and improving local governance.
