According to a report from the Executive Unit for Managing Displacement Camps in Marib, a total of 708 fires have erupted in the region’s displacement camps between 2020 and 2024. Additionally, the fires have destroyed hundreds of shelters, tents, and caravans, severely impacting internally displaced families and African refugees residing in the area.

Yearly Breakdown of Casualties

The data indicates that 2024 has recorded the highest number of victims, with 41 individuals affected (3 deceased and 38 injured). The year 2022 follows closely behind, with 33 victims (14 dead and 19 injured). In 2023, 28 people suffered due to fire incidents (6 fatalities and 22 injuries). Both 2020 and 2021 reported 17 victims each, with 5 deaths and 12 injuries in 2020, and 6 deaths and 11 injuries in 2021.

Increasing Frequency of Fires

The statistics also show that 2023 experienced the highest frequency of fire incidents in displacement camps, totaling 219 occurrences. This was followed by 207 incidents in 2024, 114 in 2022, and 102 in 2021. Notably, 2020 recorded the lowest number of fires, with only 66 incidents.

Common Causes of Fires

The report identifies several common causes for these fires. These include the use of tents as kitchens, unsafe electrical connections, the spread of flames to tents, and the explosion of domestic gas cylinders. Each of these factors contributes significantly to the risk of fire in these precarious living conditions.

In light of these findings, the Executive Unit has urged humanitarian partners to take proactive measures to reduce fire risks and their impact on displacement camps in Marib. Suggested actions include replacing temporary shelters with more durable structures, ensuring safe electrical wiring, and activating emergency contact numbers alongside fire safety awareness programs.
