Yemen Participates in 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice

The Republic of Yemen actively participated in the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, held in Nice, France. The conference, themed "Accelerating Action and Mobilizing All Actors for Ocean Conservation and Sustainable Use," featured a delegation led by Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi.

Conference Goals and Objectives

Hosted by the governments of France and Costa Rica from June 9 to 13, the conference attracted a wide array of international participants, including governments, organizations, and agencies focused on ocean and marine issues. The primary aim is to accelerate global efforts to conserve oceans and promote sustainable usage, supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 14.

Key Priorities of the Conference

The conference will concentrate on three main priorities:

  1. Completing multilateral processes related to oceans.
  2. Mobilizing financial resources to support sustainable blue economy development.
  3. Enhancing marine knowledge and science to inform effective policy-making.

Yemen’s Commitment to Marine Conservation

In a statement to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized Yemen’s commitment to protecting its marine and coastal environments despite current challenges. He highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with the international community to ensure the sustainability of marine resources. Additionally, he noted the importance of developing the blue economy in Yemen’s coastal areas and islands to improve livelihoods for coastal communities.

Addressing Marine Environmental Challenges

Minister Al-Sharjabi underscored the urgent need for cooperation among countries and regional and international organizations. He called for the establishment of sustainable policies to protect marine biodiversity, reduce pollution, and combat the impacts of climate change, which threaten marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of millions globally. He expressed hope that the conference would mobilize necessary support for environmental initiatives in Yemen and foster strategic partnerships to enhance the capabilities of national institutions in the water and environment sectors.

Importance of the Conference

The conference serves as a crucial international platform to assess progress made during the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. It facilitates the exchange of successful experiences among countries and partners while establishing an ambitious roadmap for ocean protection and sustainable use.

Through this engagement, Yemen aims to contribute to global efforts in marine conservation and sustainable development, ensuring a healthier ocean for future generations.
