In a meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Dr. Mohammed Al-Zahouri, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, met with Marine Kaidom Shay, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The two officials focused on enhancing joint cooperation and improving social protection for vulnerable groups, including refugees.
During the meeting, Minister Al-Zahouri reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling the pledges made at the 2023 Global Refugee Forum. He emphasized the need for international support to realize these commitments, particularly concerning livelihood opportunities for migrants and refugees, as well as institutional capacity building for the ministry.
Minister Al-Zahouri urged the UNHCR to provide assistance to host communities, as refugees and internally displaced persons have placed significant pressure on local services. He highlighted the importance of enhancing social protection systems that cater to both refugees and host communities. Furthermore, he stressed the need for support that enables the government to establish a robust and sustainable social support network.
In response, the UN official praised the ministry’s efforts in supporting marginalized groups and developing social policies. He noted that the priorities and goals of the ministry and the UNHCR align closely, which strengthens their effective partnership and coordination.
The UN representative pointed out that the stable security situation in Aden has prompted international organizations and agencies to activate their activities and programs. He expressed his intention to engage with international donors to secure additional funding necessary for supporting these initiatives.
At the conclusion of their meeting, both parties agreed to establish joint contact points to coordinate their efforts and actions in the coming period. This collaboration aims to enhance the effectiveness of their initiatives in supporting vulnerable populations in the region.
