Minister Discusses Fisheries Sector Interventions in Yemen

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Major General Salem Al-Saqtri, convened today in Aden with Zena Ali, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Yemen. The meeting focused on ongoing interventions in the fisheries sector, particularly the rehabilitation project for the fishing port.

Progress on Fishing Port Rehabilitation

The meeting included key figures such as Dr. Abdul Salam Ali, President of the General Authority for Fisheries in the Gulf of Aden, Dr. Mosaed Al-Qatibi, Director General of the Executive Unit for Foreign Funded Projects, and Tom Trood, Project Manager for the Fishing Port Rehabilitation within the UNDP. They discussed the current status of construction work at the fishing port, which receives funding from the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, amounting to $35 million through the German Development Bank.

Sustainable Fisheries Development Initiatives

The discussion also covered the Sustainable Fisheries Development Project in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden. This initiative, implemented by the UNDP in collaboration with local partners, aims to rehabilitate nine fish landing centers in the provinces of Aden, Hadramout, Al-Mahra, and Taiz. The World Bank funds this project, which seeks to address various challenges to ensure smooth execution in line with established programs, in coordination with the Ministry’s leadership and relevant authorities.

Commitment to Project Timelines

Minister Al-Saqtri emphasized the importance of completing the restoration and rehabilitation work at the fishing port and the associated fish landing centers. He highlighted the ministry’s commitment to overcoming obstacles that hinder the implementation of ongoing projects in the fisheries sector. Furthermore, he expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Federal Republic of Germany and the World Bank to Yemen.

This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance Yemen’s fisheries sector, aiming for sustainable development and improved livelihoods for local communities.
